Volunteer opportunities always open

Mex Y Can has a number of Committees that help guide the activities of the Association. These committees provide volunteer opportunities for members and potential members, influence the direction of Mex Y Can and provide input to the activities conducted by the Board of Directors. Current committes include:

Marketing and Social Media

Andrea Martinez

Talented and well-educated University of Manitoba I.H. Asper School of Business graduate with successful academic background in Marketing and International Business.

Andrea has bilingual fluency in Spanish and English. She has strong management skills with several years of customer service experience, interacting with clients, strengthening problem solving skills, as well as leadership and team building. Andrea has participated at several Mexican Pavilions during Folklorama as an active volunteer.

For over three years she has successfully managed the social media platforms for the association, increasing the exposure of the group. She has participated in the graphic design on many promotional materials for Mex Y Can events and recently she was the Media and Marketing Coordinator for the Mexican Pavilions, Mariachi and Tequila, the Heart of Mexico and Arriba El Norte at Folklorama. Andrea’s acumen in dealing with people is extraordinary and her strong communication skills are an asset for the Association.

Edgar Rascon

Edgar was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His father immigrated to Canada in 1967 and then his mother in 1972, both from the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. Growing up in Canada, Edgar traveled to Mexico with his parents at least once every other year and was able to learn to be fluent in English and Spanish. He has read countless books on the history of Mexico from various eras but with his favorite being the Pre-Colonial life of the Aztecs. While working in the Audio Visual industry Edgar took an interest in volunteering with the Mexican Community starting in 2004.

Edgar has participated in a Coordinator role in 7 Mexican Pavilions at Folklorama and in several events of the Association. Edgar holds an Audio Visual and Broadcasting degree and currently works at Toyota Canada as a Sales Advisor.


Wendy Hernandez

Wendy is a commercial mortgage administrator with over 10 years of management and administrative experience specializing in data/financial management, and data automation. She studied science, statistics, Italian, French, and political studies at the University of Manitoba.

Since arriving in Canada from Mexico City at the age of three, outside of a successful career she has been passionate about both training with and coaching local sports teams. Some accomplishments: earning her black belt in Taekwondo from the World Taekwondo Federation & leading the Garden City U-15 girls to the city championships.

Another passion of hers is photography. Beginning as a landscape photographer and moving on to her current focus in sports & portraiture.

Wendy joined the Mex Y Can team as financing co-coordinator for the Mexican Pavilion – Arriba El Norte! and also volunteered for Mexican Independence and Day of the Dead festivals.

Since first becoming involved with the association, Wendy has been inspired by the dedication and camaraderie of the local Mexican community and is happily committed to further sharing and promoting Mexican culture in the province.


Carmen Perez

Carmen was born in Hidalgo Mexico, she and her family started the adventure and immigrated to Canada in 2003. Married and mother of 3 beautiful kids, Carmen has worked in different Mexican and Canadian restaurants in Winnipeg.

It was in 2003, with the support of the Mexican community in Manitoba, she was part of the first group of volunteers founding Mex Y Can Association of Manitoba Inc.

Carmen participated helping in many fundraising events and it was in 2007 when finally the Mexican pavilion was done for first time. She has helped in different areas including admissions and cultural display, but her passion for Mexican cuisine made her became the kitchen and food line coordinator in the 2009 Mexican pavilion at Folklorama. She volunteered as well in the 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014 pavilions, in the kitchen.

Carmen is willing to continue helping the Mexican community and Mex Y Can association as well.
